The UA Ombuds Office advances consciousness in communication, collaboration, and organizational climate through preventive support, proactive solutions, and positive response to conflict and other challenges.
Approach & Values
Positive & Strengths-Based
We look for and build on strengths in the individuals, teams, and departments/units that we serve.
Inclusive, Equitable, & Just
We serve all members of our diverse campus community and strive to embody inclusivity and multicultural excellence in all of our services, and to advance equity, inclusion, and justice within the institution. This includes being a safe, confidential space to raise concerns related to systemic racism and other forms of institutional inequity/injustice.
Developmental & Transformative
We see conflict and other challenges as opportunities for learning, growth, and transformation at the individual, group, departmental, and organizational level.
We strive to acknowledge and work on the individual, group/community, and systems level to the extent possible, recognizing that individuals, groups, and the situations they encounter are interconnected with or influenced by other people, dynamics, and systems.
Preventive & Proactive
We prevent destructive conflict through early intervention and proactive services, saving you a lot of time and stress in the long run. It is never too early to contact the Ombuds Office. We invite you to contact us about providing preventive and proactive conflict management services for your department/unit, or for you as an individual.
We help those involved in impactful/harm-causing matters (on all sides) to fully understand and address what happened, including the resulting impacts/effects, needs, concerns, and goals of all involved, so that they can move forward in a constructive manner.
We seek to understand and address the needs, interests, concerns, and goals of all people involved in a situation to the extent possible.
Mindful & Responsive
We believe that a more mindful organization is a more healthy, peaceful, and effective organization. We see conflict and other challenges as a naturally arising occurrence when people with varying needs, styles, backgrounds, personalities, etc. come together to work on a shared project, program, or goal, or toward a shared vision. We help you respond mindfully and effectively to the challenges you face so that you can move forward with advancing your important work and achieving your goals.
We build on best practices with innovative and creative approaches to the complex situations that individuals and units/departments face in their professional and academic pursuits. In addition, we believe conflict and other challenges can lead to exciting innovations when handled in a constructive and creative manner.
